What's up with the hands?

I know this is such a minor part of the Arlington National Cemetery disgrace, but it’s been niggling my brain for days, ever since I saw this picture. The former guy’s cheery thumbs up is obviously entirely inappropriate, as has been pointed out. But what about the way three of the women family members are holding their hands? A quick online search of Sgt. Nicole Leeann Gee, shows a photo of her making the same pinky and pointer finger up hand gesture seen here, so it’s likely in her memory. I’m guessing it means either “Rock On” or that they are big UT Austin sports fans (Hook Em Horns) but is there another meaning I’m not aware of? I’m also puzzled by the hands of the woman wearing the blue dress and brown belt. It’s not a natural, relaxed way of holding your hands and I’m wondering whether there is some sort of symbolism or meaning to it. Can anyone offer some insight? TIA
